A Belated Happy-Father’s Day Message. Better Late Than Never!

I caught sight of the boy at a distance, watching us with wide eyes. We were with our daughter, playing on the swings, like any typical day at the park.

However, our “normal” was not his “normal.” He watched intently as my husband played with our daughter, something that was common for us. Daddy can always make our little girl laugh.

He pushed her on the swing and in one dramatic motion would act as though her little two-year-old legs could kick him off balance. Daddy would stumble and rear back, sometimes falling flat on his back in the sand. Our little girl laughed hysterically. She laughed and laughed.

She knew that this was all a funny game; my husband can be quite demonstrative and goofy. Despite being two at the time, she realized she couldnā€™t muster the required force to kick him to the ground, but instead that his little interaction with her was something special. Daddy made playing on the swings fun and she relished in it.

Then the little boy at a distance, watching with longing eyes with his caregiver, couldn’t help but be vocal.

ā€œOh can we?ā€ began the boy. ā€œCan we please play ā€˜Daddyā€™ again? Can you be Daddy just one more time?ā€ he begged.

ā€œNah,ā€ huffed the woman standing half slumped next to him, ā€œnot gonna play that game anymore, boy,ā€ she said.

ā€œOhā€¦okayā€ gasped the boy sadness and disappointment visible in his watery eyes, as he longingly looked at the daddy he saw playing with his little girl.

There are some roles in life that no one can fill, other than being a real father, a dad.

Yes, we can choose to love the parents we have been given. We can choose to love them with their flaws. Thank you for commenting. šŸ™‚
