It’s been a long, uphill battle these past few weeks. What should have been a routine appendicitis issue turned into something much worse—a punctured appendix, a severe infection, and sepsis that spread to my colon. The doctors were worried about complications like a colostomy bag, and for a while, even keeping liquids down was a challenge. The pain was excruciating, and recovery has been slow.

But despite everything, I kept moving forward. Because as a small press author, the work doesn’t stop—even when you’re sick.

The Cover Reveal: Rebranding the Serpent Series

One of the few things that kept me going through the worst of it was working with my publisher to refine my book covers. We wanted a more cohesive brand for The Serpent’s Bridge, The Serpent Woman, and now, Twilight of the Serpent. I’m beyond excited about how they turned out, and I can’t wait to share them with you.

It’s a huge milestone, but one that also reminds me of the constant hustle required in indie publishing.

The Reality of Small Press & Indie Authors

If you’re a small press or indie author, you know the grind. Unlike authors with traditional publishing houses, we don’t have massive marketing teams, built-in PR support, or access to an extensive network of pre-release reviewers.

Many traditionally published books are sent to curated lists of reviewers, guaranteeing buzz before launch. Meanwhile, small press and indie authors often have to personally request reviews, pitch to influencers, and run our own advertising—all while writing the next book. Every review, every sale, every share requires effort.

I’ve done everything from paid and organic ads to outreach campaigns, and it’s still an uphill battle. That’s why reader support is so crucial.

How You Can Make a Huge Difference

Supporting an indie author isn’t just about buying a book (though that’s amazing and deeply appreciated). Here’s how you can help, even if you’re on a budget:
    •    Leave a review. Even a short review on Amazon or Goodreads can make a huge difference in visibility.
    •    Request the book at your local library. Many libraries will order books if patrons request them.
    •    Share on social media. A simple post or shoutout helps spread the word.
    •    Tell a friend. Personal recommendations are still the most powerful form of book marketing.
