The Virtue of Positive Reinforcement: Leading, Motivating and Instructing in Healthier Ways
Psychologist, Harvard professor, and father of positive reinforcement, B.F. Skinner conducted numerous studies dating back to as early as 1938 that gathered extensive data on the effects of positive reinforcement. Skinner coined the phrase operant conditioning, which in layman’s terms is basically changing a behavior by giving a reward to elicit the desired response. Therefore, the opposite of positive reinforcement is punishment.
How Much is Your Time Worth?
Are you a “Trekkie?” You know, a Star Trek fan? Then you are well aware that people for centuries have been theorizing ways to travel back through time or forward. You’re probably among them. From theories of bending gravitational fields to scrutinizing over black holes, everyone at one point has wished we could have changed one thing in the past.
And this is precisely why some of us value the one resource in our lives that we can never replace and get back— time. A tabloid recently posted an article claiming that Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt were both “racing against time” to try and look younger for their roles in “Go Like Hell,” their new movie that is in development. Though, it seems that time isn’t valuable simply because we want to grow old gracefully. Time is precious for all of us, especially being that most of us who live in the U.S. work longer hours than our counterparts in other countries. According to a recent ABC article, Americans work more than anyone. The Bureau of Labor Statistics tracked this trending through the 1990s and reported that a whopping “25 million Americans (20.5 percent of the total work force) worked at least 49 hours a week in 1999. The Power of Regret
“I regret not having spent more time with my mother.”
President Obama got personal Sunday when he spoke of regret to University of Malaya students and South East Asia leaders during a visit to Kuala Lumpur.
“Because she died early — she got cancer right around when she was my age, actually, she was just a year older than I am now — she died. It happened very fast, in about six months.”
The president wasn’t above being honest enough to admit his regrets. He’ll forever second-guess the time he didn’t spend with his mother, Ann Dunham, who was 52 when she died of ovarian cancer in 1995. In searching our own past, we likely will find at least one thing that we regret. We strive to live life absent of any regret and to live everyday as if it was our last, to tell all of the people that we care about that we love them. The Unknown: Facing the Dark Road
Have you ever been brave enough to drive through Utah on I-70 at night? When I ventured on my solo trip across the country last May from New York to Los Angeles, with only my dogs, I was tempted to pull an all-nighter. But my life partner questioned my judgment as he texted me the following: “Are you nuts?”
